Free Negro bonds, 1843-1863

This source comprises bonds for free African Americans who had applied to the St. Louis County Court and obtained a license to reside in Missouri. These bonds, in the sum of $100-1,000, were to be void if the individual “shall be of good behavior during his [or her] residence in the State of Missouri.” These bonds often include the individual’s occupation and a physical description. They also include the name(s) of the individual(s) securing the bond.
