Civil War transportation passes, 1862-1864

These transportation passes permitted the bearer of the pass to travel from one point to another via steamboat. The departure and arrival points noted on these passes are in Missouri, Illinois, Arkansas, Kentucky, Tennessee, and Louisiana. Most of these passes were issued to Union soldiers, but the collection also includes passes issued to prisoners, deserters, refugees, nurses, and sanitary agents. The passes often include the soldier’s name, rank, and regiment; date of the pass; number of the pass; city of departure; city of arrival; note on nature of service; name of steamboat; and signature.
