“Casualties European War, July 20, 1918–September 8, 1939,” [three scrapbooks of newspaper clippings]

This source comprises scrapbooks of newspaper clippings regarding World War I casualties clipped from several St. Louis–area newspapers, primarily the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, St. Louis Globe-Democrat, St. Louis Star, and St. Louis Republic. Many articles describe the circumstances in which the soldier was killed, wounded, or captured. Some articles are accompanied by a photograph of the soldier. These scrapbooks include many casualty lists, which usually only contain the soldier’s name, rank, and home street address or home town. These casualty lists include soldiers from Missouri and other states in the Midwest. The third volume of these scrapbooks is titled “Return of Missouri Troops from Overseas.”
